Moving Forward on Health Care
From MSNBC. Progressives may not like this butit looks like the White House is leaning towards finding the areas ofreform that will get GOP and Dem support and reshaping the bill in the next 4-6 weeks hoping for bipartisan ideas, involvement and passage. It will be on a smaller scale and we still have no assurance the GOPwon't stall and turn their backs on yet another invitation to getinvolved.
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama advised fellow Democrats against trying to jam a health care bill through Congress after taking a devastating hit from the loss of aSenate seat. He said Wednesday it's time to come together around a billthat can draw Republican support, too.
When Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown takes office he will hand the GOP power to block the Democratic agenda, including Obama's top domestic priority of extending health coverage tothe uninsured.
"The people of Massachusetts spoke. He's got to be part of that process," Obama said.
Now Democrats need to reach across the aisle onpopular health care provisions such as cost controls and aid to smallbusinesses, he said.
EarlierWednesday, Obama political adviser David Axelrod said administrationofficials will take into account the message voters delivered Tuesdayin electing Brown, but he declined to go further.
"It's not an option simply to walk away from a problem that's only going to get worse," Axelrod said.
Some positives about this:
1. The GOP will haveto let go of the argument: the people spoke by electing Brown and theDem's just ignored those voices and jammed health care through anyway.
2. At least some important health care reform will happen (they can savemore controversial areas like a public option for the 3rd or 4th yearwhen the economy is better and Obama has earned back some capital-andsomething like that would fire up the base when it's needed most.) If GOP members help craft and vote for this, can they really be critical of health care reform at election time? Let's not forget-many wanted to run on repealing health care reform.
3.This will be the most public invitation yet for the GOP to join in-nothalt or reject altogether-the process (I'm sure he'll make a big pleain his State of the Union.) If they slap his hand collectively thistime, the public won't respond well and their approval numbers will continue to fall.
4. The Conservative Dem's in danger of losing office right now will show that they:
a) were not tone deaf and listened to the message of theAmerican people by scaling back a huge bill that many were worriedabout cost, size, etc.
b) actually passed health care reforms that were needed and willhopefully achieve the president's goals of covering more people, costcontrols, etc.
c) The insurance companies will reward them with more $$$ (only kidding on that being a good thing!)
Seriously, such moves might actually help their chances of re-election. Not that Iwould not like to personally boot a few of the Blue Dogs out myself!
5. The liberal Dem's can show that they were not willing to cave onjust any bill and can promise to fight for bigger change-maybe even a public option-later, maybethrough Reconciliation
6. They can start a fresh, positive sell of this package as it should have been done in the first place. They should hire better marketing people/advisors for sure!
7. They can win the hearts and minds of the American people back by sending a message that they will sharply and passionately focus on jobs and the economy as a priority (although most of us realize health care reform is needed to improve the economy, clearly that message will resonate better when the jobs picture gets brighter.)
My heart truly breaks today thinking of all the time and energythat went into negotiations, compromise, etc. And when I think of theuninsured out there or those being rejected by insurance companiesbecause of pre-existing conditions, or even all the waste, I want to cry (and give Coakley atongue-lashing at the same time!)
But President Obama warned long ago:this process would not be quick or easy and could get dirty (death panels, killing Grandma??) Just when we thought the long, hard road was nearing it's end, none of usever expected such a huge pot hole to stop this in it's tracks, but what can we do? The grim situtation is what it is. Playing the blame game or remaining in denial will not help.
How will PresidentObama lead on this issue? It will be a huge test of faith and leadership.
